The Pittsburgh Penguins today officially resigned Sidney Crosby to a two year, $17.4 Million contract extension as the superstitious Crosby once again keeps his AAV at $8.7 Million. Signed through the 2026-2027 season, Crosby also once again gives the Penguins tremendous financial flexibility.

“There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins organization, ” GM Kyle Dubas said in a released statement. “Sidney is the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest players in the history of the game. His actions today show why he is one of hockey’s greatest winners and leaders. Sidney is making a tremendous personal sacrifice in an effort to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done for his entire career.”

Dubas statement of Crosby making a “tremendous personal sacrifice” is absolutely spot on. Crosby sold himself millions of dollars short on his current deal (12-year contract) that paid him just $3 million per season in the final three years of the contract. And despite being 37 years old, Crosby sold himself short again on this extension. The Penguins discussed a number of parameters and were very willing to take on a cap hit over $10.5 million and even going as long as five years on an offer due to the sacrifice Crosby made on his previous deal and what he’s meant for the franchise. Yet, here’s Crosby giving the Penguins another deal where the team is taking about a $2 million or so less cap hit than the market dictates they should be. One thing that became clear over the last couple weeks is while Crosby had concerns of being tied up too long term in a rebuild situation, it was also important for him not to hamstring the organization To read this insider news, subscribe to get “Inside Access”!
