Are we headed towards a somewhat quiet week for the Penguins at the NHL level or do we see Pittsburgh enact a bigger teardown?
Kyle Dubas and his staff have essentially taken the stance of we owe it to the long-term prospects of the franchise to consider some unpopular moves, hence trading a beloved player like Bryan Rust, while also taken the stance we are very content if everybody is back for another season.
Rival NHL executives have known for months what Kyle Dubas asking price is on scoring winger Rickard Rakell. Pittsburgh has put an ‘ask’ of what you’d have to pay for a top-line winger with term, whom the Penguins feel is on a bargain contract. One league source says Pittsburgh continues to put a message out there of no urgency to move Rakell who has three years remaining on his deal and entering his age 31 season. Bryan Rust has become a different story. Pittsburgh is said to look at Rust as a situation where his value now might not be the same a year from now. Rust losing all trade protection on July 1 has become quite the story in league circles.
