Steelers continue to do their homework on Wells
Running back Beanie Wells remains a player of interest for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers had Wells in for a physical earlier this week and Wells is heading to Pittsburgh for a visit tonight with the Steelers coaches now that head coach Mike Tomlin and others are back in town after College scouting trips to Florida and Michigan State earlier this week. Tomlin and his staff were in Morgantown for West Virginia’s pro day this afternoon as QB Geno Smith and WR Tavon Austin dazzled scouts and coaches.
Wells a first round pick in 2009, was released by Arizona last week after rushing for just 234 yards on 88 carries in 2012. Wells in 2011 had a career year with 1,047 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. In his career Wells has averaged 4.0 yards per carry and has 24 touchdowns in 51 games.
He’s had knee and lower body issues, but indications are his physical checked out “okay” with the Steelers but there are some concerns. The Steelers are considering bringing Wells in on a one year deal to add competition for the starting job.
The Steelers have several question marks at the running back position and no legitimate featured runner. Jonathan Dwyer showed some flashes last season but he continues to struggle with his weight as he balloned to over 260 pounds late in the regular season.
Notes: Steelers safety Ryan Mundy has reportedly signed with the New York Giants…..Two linebackers of interest came off the market on Wednesday when Lorenzo Alexander signed with the Cardinals and Moise Fokou signed with the Titans. The Steelers made a multi-year offer to Alexander and had a visit scheduled with Fokou.
