ILB Stevenson Sylvester the Steelers 2010 5th round pick has agreed to a one year deal, Bob Labriola of Steelers.com reports. Sylvester who has spent the last three seasons with the Steelers was not tendered a contract and became a UFA.
Sylvester a special teams player has 22 tackles in his career and has made one career start at ILB. Sylvester had one tackle last season.
The Steelers don’t view him as a potential starter, which was the reason they didn’t tender him.
ON PITTSBURGH’S DEPTH AT ILB
The Steelers depth at ILB is thin for the short-term and long-term. The Steelers have a star middle linebacker in Lawrence Timmons and veteran Larry Foote next to him who agreed to a three year deal this off-season.
Foote, though, is not a long-term answer and might only give the Steelers one or two more quality seasons.
The Steelers drafted Sean Spence in the third round last year but Steelers officials have no expectations of Spence playing this season and some feel his career could be over after a terrible knee injury.
That has MLB very high on the Steelers radar in the first three rounds of the NFL draft this month.
