Steelers third round pick Sean Spence flashed his athleticism and closing speed at the inside linebacker spot in tonight’s preseason win, but the Steelers won’t be able to see Spence flash his skill set until next season.
Spence suffered a severe knee injury in the win, believed to have suffered a torn ACL and torn MCL that will put him on injured reserve ending his season if the early diagnosis holds up.
Spence is the Steelers second high draft pick of the 2012 draft class to go down with a severe knee injury. David DeCastro had successful knee surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined for up to three months but is expected to be placed on the new IR designation that won’t end his season.
From a depth standpoint, the Spence injury gives the Steelers a big hole at middle linebacker with Stevenson Sylvester sidelined for at least two more weeks and the team already waiving Ivy due to injury.
