Dri Archer’s offensive snaps in week 2 — Zero —

The 2014 third round pick continues to have no role in the offense, prompting speculation in Steelers circles today that Archer could be released as early as today with the Steelers needing to clear a roster spot for Le’Veon Bell by 4:00 p.m.

The Steelers, though, would like to try to trade Archer first, Gerry Dulac wrote during his chat in the Post-Gazette today.

Dulac writes in his chat:

“What I think the Steelers will try to do first is trade him to get one of those two draft picks from 2016 they traded away to get Brandon Boykin and Josh Scobee. Believe me, they are going to try to get those picks back and there are very few guys they would be willing to trade who have enough cache to get a fifth or sixth round pick in return. Archer could be one.”

Archer having any trade value (likely none) remains to be seen and for Archer it will be a surprise if he’s even on an NFL roster next season. This football thing is unlikely to work out for him.

The Steelers are also said to be willing to move an inside linebacker to get some picks back between now and next year’s draft.

The fifth rounder the Steelers gave up for Brandon Boykin is one that may sting as Boykin has not been able to move into the top-3 on the depth chart and is currently fifth behind William Gay, Antwon Blake, Cortez Allen, and Ross Cockrell.

Boykin playing in 60% of the snaps, which would make the Steelers send a fourth rounder instead of a fifth round draft choice to the Eagles, is unlikely to happen.

Boykin has played in just 11 defensive snaps in two games.[/hide]
