Penn State Update
Penn State Linebacker Aaron Maybin, a projected top 20 pick ran the 40 yard dash in the unofficial time of a 4.78 this morning. As reported last week it was speculated that Maybin gained 12-15 pounds and that appears to be the case. Maybin weighed in at 249lbs.
Wakes Forest Linebacker Aaron Curry regarded as the top linebacker entering the draft ran the 40 yard dash in the unofficial time of 4.54. Curry is believed to be getting consideration as the #1 pick according to recent reports.
Center A.Q. Shipley helped his stock as he ran a 5.19 40-yard dash and also bench-pressed 225lbs – 33 times. Shipley is still seen as a mid-round selection because of his size but teams like him and feel he has value. There could be a team out there that takes him earlier than most people think he will go.
Mixed reviews on Derrick Williams who ran the 40 yard dash in the unoffical time of 4.58. He needs to improve that time in his pro day. Two of the Steelers AFC North rivals, the Ravens, and Bengals were seen speaking to Williams according to a report.
Wide out Deon Butler ran a 4.38 in the 40 yard dash. Butler was also a standout in the 60 yard shuttle ranking third among wide receivers ( 11.32)
McCoy, McKillop Update
RB LeSean McCoy didn’t improve his stock nor hurt it. He did not run because of the flu. McCoy is still viewed as the #3 running back on the board. Needs a solid pro day to guarantee a first round selection.
LB Scott McKillop ran the 40 yard-dash in the unofficial time of 4.77.
Pat Whites stock is rising
Don Banks of SI.com writes that ‚ÄúWhite threw the ball accurately and with authority” and improved his stock. White ran a 4.55 40-yard dash which was impressive but scouts are raving about how well he threw the ball.
Interesting quotes from Banks article
“I’ll tell you who looked good today and that was Pat White,” a long-time assistant coach told Banks. “He really helped himself with that workout. He made people recognize him as a quarterback.”
Said another scout to Banks: “He was sharp and he made all the throws you want to see. Our quarterbacks coach said he looked better than most people anticipated.”

Offensive Line update
Cal’s (Center) Alex Mack did not participate in the combine. He will get serious consideration at 32.
Word is Max Unger’s stock continues to plummet. The Steelers like his versatility (can play guard or center) but it’s believed some teams are questioning his strength. He numbers on the bench press were some-what disappointing. 22 Reps – 225 lbs. A possibility in the 1st or 2nd round for the Steelers.
Potential Targets in Mid-Rounds
Cincinnati Guard Trevor Canfield is a name that continues to create some buzz. Steelers came away very impressed at the senior bowl. A very good run blocker. Strong possibility in the mid rounds.
Auburn’s Tyronne Green is another guard to keep an eye on leading up to the draft. Solid run blocker that is beleived to be on the Steelers radar. There’s rumors out there that the Steelers aren’t very high on Duke Robinson. Lack of speed maybe a reason
The Steelers were seen speaking to Louisville’s Eric Wood who managed 30 reps on the bench press the other day. Wood goes into the draft as a center but like Unger has the ability to play guard.
A dream scenario would be for Alabama’s Andre Smith to fall out of the top 20 but it’s not going to happen.
Defensive Line Update
Michael Johnson who could fall to the Steelers at #32 ran a 4.75 – 40 yard dash. Johnson ranked third among defensive linemen in the vertical jump (38.5). At 6-7, 270 lbs, Johnson has a ton of potential. He performs very well in drills conducted at the combine because of how physically gifted he is but he under-achieved in college. He could be a force in a 3-4 scheme because of his potential and while there are some question marks with him, if he is on the board when the Steelers draft at 32, Johnson will be their selection.
Cornerback Update
Cornerbacks will workout tomorrow. A group that Steelers will be keeping a close on eye on.
