Aaron Rodgers broke his silence today appearing on the Pat McAfee. While Rodgers had some nice things to say about the Steelers during his near 45 minute segment, Rodgers made it clear he will continue To read this insider news, subscribe to get “Inside Access”!
Rodgers indicated he has a serious girlfriend right now and some in his inner circles dealing with some very difficult that ‘according to Rodgers’ are more serious than making a commitment on signing somewhere. “To make a commitment to a team is a big thing, whether you’re a first-year player or a 20-year vet. And I had a lot of great conversations with a lot of teams. Not one of those was the Jets because that wasn’t a great conversation. I had some good conversations, but I’ve been up front with all of them.” I’m in a different phase of my life,” Rodgers said. “I’m 41 years old. I’m in a serious relationship. I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention. I have personal commitments I made not knowing what my future was going to look like after last year that are important to me. And I have a couple people in my inner, inner circle that are really battling some difficult stuff.”
Want to dissect the Rodgers interview over and over, it’s easy to come to assumption this was him respectfully telling the Steelers to move on and take a page out of the Giants book, hence, don’t wait for him.
Or is it another test?
The NFL draft is a week away and Rodgers is as calculated as they come. This could very well be him waiting to see what the Steelers next move is. He shows them a little love today but not the extent where he seems infatuated or likely to sign with the Steelers. It would have been easy to say ‘yeah i have some stuff going on but hopefully i can join the Steelers at somepoint. There was none of that. Now question is will the Steelers wait until training camp like Mike Tomlin seemed to hint or is there an actual deadline like Art Rooney indicated at the owners’ meetings where Rooney for whatever reason expressed optimism Rodgers was eventually going to sign…….
Rodgers was complementary of his talks and visit with Pittsburgh so far.
“I’ve talked to Mike Tomlin,” Rodgers said. “He’s more than I even thought from afar, as far as the type of person he is. I have a lot of respect for what he’s accomplished in the league. [Offensive coordinator] Arthur Smith, talk about a guy that doesn’t need to work, he doesn’t need the work, but he’s a grinder. We’ve had a friendship for a couple years now. I like what he’s all about. And the quarterback coach, Tom Arth, he was in the quarterback room with me in 2006 in Green Bay. … Personally, I wanted to see what it was like there at the facility, meet Omar [Khan] in person, just get a glimpse, a snippet of what life would be like in Pittsburgh.”
Still, it was interesting to see Rodgers point out he tried to keep the visit quiet and the Steelers knew that coming in. Mike Tomlin sent his coaches/staff home early to keep as many people away as possible. Instead within twenty minutes Rodgers was in the building, a staffer in the communications department leaked To read this insider news, subscribe to get “Inside Access”!
“I went out to Pittsburgh and tried to do that as quietly as possible,” Rodgers said. A lot of people think that I’m desperate for attention, even though I haven’t talked to you or anybody else in three months. But I did fly into a different airport, not the downtown one. I got a malibu rental car to the facility, to the backside practice field. Got let in the practice field and then somebody in the building must have said something.”
A good way to summarize all of this is: Rodgers still wants to play next season, likes Pittsburgh but doesn’t love the fit enough to commit now and grind through off-season program; Therefore, he is sending the message to rest the of the league that ‘I’m 41 years old and one of the greatest quarterbacks ever who has earned the right to do what i want and if you really want me, you will wait for me to make a decision sometime in July when training camp opens.
