The Pittsburgh Penguins are among five teams on Ray Whitney’s trade list but the two sides are not close to a deal for multiple reasons.
Pittsburgh whose focus has been elsewhere, have yet to get seriously involved on the Whitney front. I’m told on Monday afternoon Pittsburgh checked in with GM Jim Rutherford and the asking price has not come down. One source characterized the Penguins as just “kicking the tires” on Whitney.
The Canes have soften their stance of a first round pick and prospect Luca Caputi but are still seeking a high draft pick and a young impact player believed to be Tyler Kennedy or Max Talbot.
Kennedy will not be moved at the deadline and Pittsburgh no longer has a 2nd round pick as indications for about a month have been that Pittsburgh won’t move a first round pick for Whitney.
Right now nothing is brewing on Pittsburgh’s front.
At this point, there is some thought that Rutherford could come up empty that Whitney has forced his hand due to Whitney’s NTC.
The Flyers who are among the five teams on Whitney’s no trade list, are not involved. Boston we can confirm is.
