Minor League Report for Aug 11: Scouts want to see Marte show the ability to walk

New Britain 6 – Altoona 5 — Starling Marte (.322 – 10 HR – 44 RBI) continues his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, 1 run scored and a walk. Marte has 3 home runs and 7 RBI’s in his last 6 games. He’s hitting .435 in his last 11 games. As good as Marte has been of late, the big thing Pirate scouts want to see out of him to end this season is start showing the ability to walk. That’s a big knock on him from scouts. Marte has just 14 walks on the season and 1 in his last 10 games…

Top pitching prospect Alderson earns 1st win

Top pitching prospect Tim Alderson (1-0, 3.60 era) earned his first win of the season Thursday night, for the Altoona Curve (7-1) who are off to their best start in franchise history. Altoona managed 13 runs on 15 hits, defeating Erie 13-5 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Alderson pitched five innings, surrendering four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. The center piece of Neal Huntington’s trade acquisitions last summer, Alderson is a tall and projectable pitcher with a lot of polish. He pitches on a downward plane and gets swings and misses with both his fastball and curveball.
