Penguins 6 – Red Wings 5 (OT)

— Justin Schultz scored 27 seconds into overtime as the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 6-5 on Wednesday night at the PPG Paints Arena —

Headliners

— Jake Guentzel assisted on Schultz OT winner to cap off a 5 point night. Guentzel led the way for Pittsburgh with a goal, 4 assists.

What will Guentzel do for an encore this season?

Those into fantasy hockey, draft him early.

— Center Adam Johnson continues to impress through the first week of camp. His blazing speed was on display and capitalized with a 2 goal night and had 6 shots on goal. At 5 vs 5, Johnson was on the ice for 11 shot attempts and 6 against.

How Johnson fares later in the preseason against stiffer competition is going to tell the story but the rookie has everyone’s attention and has emerged into a prime contender to win the third line center spot to open the season with Conor Sheary and Bryan Rust on the wings.

No one should anoint Johnson becoming this years version of Jake Guentzel just yet but there’s one similarity between the two that stands out in how Johnson is very calm with the puck in letting plays develop. He doesn’t rush things like a lot of young players often do.

Greg McKegg scored in the win and he’s not just impressing the coaching staff, players have noticed the camp he is having.

Another area of McKegg’s game that’s putting him in position to win a job in camp:

He can play wing and forward.

A team source tells me McKegg is already becoming a favorite of Mike Sullivan’s.

McKegg drove position well with a 70CF% at even strength.

Matt Murray stopped 19 of 22 shots in his preseason debut.

Bet on local talk shows being flooded today with calls that the Penguins should have kept Marc Andre Fleury.
