Injuries piling up for Pens
Injuries are begining to pile up for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Defenseman Zbynek Michalek suffered a right shoulder/arm injury in the second period of Monday afternoon’s game against the New Jersey Devils.
Michalek left in the game in a considerable amount pain after being hit in the right corner. The team is not expected to update Michalek’s status until tomorrow. He was favoring his right arm when he left the ice and immediately went to the locker room.
Michalek is a minus-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, defenseman Brooks Orpik was a surprise scratch and remains bothered by a nagging groin injury that team contacts are saying is believed to be related to Orpik’s hernia surgery from the summer.
Orpik was sidelined late in the preseason but appeared in the first two regular season games.
If Orpik and Michalek are sidelined for Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, veteran defenseman Andrew Hutchinson (1G-1A-2PTS) will be in line for a callup.
At the forward position, Jordan Staal (foot) and Arron Asham (left shoulder) remain out indefinitely.
