2009 MLB Draft is deep with pitching but are the Pirates targeting USC’s Grant Green?
The Pirates select 4th in the upcoming June Draft and for the second consecutive season, it is a very important draft towards the Pirates becoming a competitive team in the future.
While the Pirates are very high on North Carolina pitcher Alex White, sources tell me the Pirates have been scouting USC shortstop Grant Green heavily over the past month.
Green, SS, (6-3, 180 lbs, junior) batted .390 (80-for-205) with 15 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 10 stolen bases and 46 RBI during his sophomore season at USC. Green led the Trojans in batting average, triples, slugging percentage (.644), on-base percentage (.438).
Green is regarded as a top 5 pick and is currently hitting .365 with 3 home runs and 23 RBI in 38 games for USC this season.
Green is represented by super agent Scott Boras. The Pirates claim they will not shy away from Scott Boras clients in 2009.
While Frank Coonelly and Scott Boras do not see eye to eye, Neal Huntington and Boras do have a good relationship dating back to Huntington’s days with the Cleveland Indians.
