Penguins in on Ray Whitney?
Jim Matheson of Edmonton Journal wrote on Sunday, “I’d be willing to bet $20 that Carolina Hurricanes winger Ray Whitney, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, will wind up in Pittsburgh, playing with either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, at the deadline. In 2006, the Penguins sent Mark Recchi to Carolina for two prospects and a second-round draft when he was 38, and he helped the Hurricanes win a Cup. Maybe there could be some reciprocity?”
Just four weeks ago Matheson wrote, “Chances are Carolina Hurricanes UFA Ray Whitney will end up with the Boston Bruins as a trade-deadline deal for a second-round draft pick.”
Whitney, 37, has 15 goals and 18 assists on the season. He has drawn significant interest around the league but to call the Penguins front runners is premature.
Sources tell me that Whitney is of interest, Pittsburgh won’t overspend for a 37 year old winger and might not be willing to offer more than a 3rd round pick.
Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Calgary are among a group of teams expected to draw significant interest.
