PIRATES ROSTER NEWS
The Pittsburgh Pirates have added 41 year old Jose Contreras to the 25-man roster. To make room for Contreras, the Pirates have optioned Jared Hughes to Triple-A. Contreras, 41, had Tommy John surgery last June and signed with the Pirates this past February. He is 78-67 all-time with a 4.55 ERA. Contreras will be used in the bullpen and Clint Hurdle see’s him being an asset. “He has a weapon in a split-finger that is pretty unique,” Hurdle said of Contreras go-to pitch.
Contreras has been effective the past couple seasons in mostly a setup role. In 85 innings with the Phillies from 2010-2012, Contreras went 7-4 with 21 holds and 9 saves. Contreras had 85 strikeouts and posted a 3.74 ERA during that span (2010-2012).
Another roster move made this afternoon is second baseman Neil Walker being placed on the DL with a lacerated right hand. The team has recalled INF Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.
