Veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar is hoping to have another stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Gonchar has signed a tryout contract with the team, Rob Rossi of the Tribune-Review reports.
Talks between the Penguins and Gonchar’s agent J.P. Barry first happened during the interview period in June where both sides explored the possibility of Gonchar joining the Penguins.
Penguins GM Jim Rutherford has been intrigued about the possibility and the Penguins will see what Gonchar has left in the tank.
Gonchar, though, is 41 years old and showed last season he has little left in the tank. Playing for the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens in 2014-2015, He collected one goal and 13 assists in 48 games.
Meanwhile, Matt Cooke’s agent Pat Morris who recently negotiated a contract for Matt Cullen with the Penguins, has approached the Penguins about a tryout for Cooke.
