4:55 p.m. – There’s a lot of talk right now that San Jose and Florida approached Pittsburgh in the past 12 hours. Looking into it. Staal is of interest to the Panthers
4:57 p.m. – As I reported last night, I keep hearing St. Louis is showing interest in Miroslav Satan. Now that he is on waivers it is a possibility.
5:00 p.m. – San Jose is very interested in Chris Pronger but the Ducks won’t move him within the division. Boston’s interest has cooled down because of the asking price ( Phil Kessel) but don’t rule them out yet. St. Louis, New Jersey and Vancouver have made offers. Washington had not made a offer yet.
5:10 p.m. – Penguins made an inquiry on Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris but they are not among the finalists for him. Boston, Washington and the New York Rangers are three of the four teams. Philadelphia is believed to be the other.
5:15 p.m. – The market for Ryan Smyth cooled over the weekend. That is no longer the case. Av’s will lose over $10 million this season. They are even trying to talk Milan Hejduk into considering to waive his NTC.
5:16 p.m. – The Sharks are shopping Jonathan Cheechoo and Christian Ehrhoff as a package for a top 6 forward or a top tier defenseman. They have placed calls to Pittsburgh, Colorado, Anaheim.
5:33 p.m. – Penguins are active in the market to add grit but they are not in on Gary Roberts. They have offers on the table to a few of their targets.
5:42 p.m. – Nik Antropov will be held out of tonight’s game as will Dominc Moore according to reports in Canada. Pittsburgh has been in talks with the Leafs but they haven’t been in on Antroprov. Moore is interesting. Was a Shero guy but Therrien didn’t see a fit for him.
7:43 p.m. – Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota and Montreal looking at Lightning forward Jeff Halpren
7:49 p.m. – The Bruins have no interest in moving Phil Kessel but their offer of Patrice Bergeron, Mark Stuart, prospect or draft pick remains on the table for Chris Pronger.
8:03 p.m – Edmonton has been active in trade talks expressing interest in Alexander Frolov and Martin St. Louis. They have been in on both players since January.
8:12 p.m. – Yesterday it looked like Pittsburgh was not going to be a major player for a top 6 forward. That has changed today as sources indicate

Penguins general manager Ray Shero needed management’s “sign-off” to proceed after his target. They are up to something. more to come
9:12 p.m. – Things are warming up for Ryan Smyth, Chris Pronger and Jay Bouwmeester but right now it is too early to tell whether any of the big three on the trade block will be moved. All three teams are going to wait until the last possible minute to move either player.
Avalanche approached the Penguins again today to see where they were on Smyth. There has been minimal talks for about a week. They really want to move his salary. San Jose, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and New York have held talks with the Av’s. Looking unlikely that he will be moved.
10:00 p.m. – Marian hossa left the ice on a stretcher tonight. He is in the hospital right now according to reports.
10:44 p.m. РPierre Lebrun reported the Penguins weren’t interested in Ryan Malone but apparently they inquired about him according to sources close to the team.
10:50 p.m. ‚Äì A ton of chatter today all day between Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. Once source I talk to predicted the Penguins would get Marty St. Louis. (I’m pretty skeptical at this point). People in Tampa Bay deny any rumors that St. Louis is on the move but a lot of teams are calling and GM‚Äôs listen. The Marty St. Louis situation is all in Brian Lawton’s hands who has frustrated GM’s with the way he has handled trade talks with other teams.
11:05 p.m. –Update on the Penguins pursuit of adding grit: Chris Neil is looking unlikely. Pittsburgh was told to increase their offer and they may be out now. The Penguins have made an offer for Av’s forward Ian Lapierre. Red Wings, Sharks, Flames and Canadiens are also in on Lapierre.
11:07 p.m. – I have not been given a strong vibe that the Penguins are very interested in Leafs forward Jamal Mayers because of the year left on his contract. Penguins and Leafs have discussed Alex Ponikarovsky over the past couple weeks.
11:09 p.m. – The Islanders are scrambling trying to find a deal for Bill Guerin. They are even listening to offers from Western Conference teams. St. Louis, Chicago, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and for some reason the Fylers keep getting mentioned as possible suitors.
11:44 p.m. – Nothing new on Miroslav Satan other than what I reported at noon. Vancouver, St. Louis and Nashville considering him.
11:48 p.m. – Pursuit of a physical defenseman has been put on hold right now. Asking price was too high on some of the Penguins targets. Wild defenseman Martin Skoula is still getting mentioned. With less than 24 hours until the trade deadline, Penguins focus is on adding a top 6 winger and grit on their 3rd or 4th line.
12:00 a.m. – I mentioned earlier that the Panthers continue to check on the availability of Jordan Staal. The Panthers would love to make a play for him but it can’t work with both teams neck & neck in the standings.
12:07 a.m. – Rob Rossi discusses the Ryan Malone speculation
