5:35 p.m. – Trade deadline has come and gone. Just wanted to thank everybody. I enjoy covering NHL free agency much better but it was fun today. Will provide some analysis later in the day.
The Penguins will have a lot of money coming off the books following the season. There is going to be a lot of movement from the Penguins starting with the draft until free agency. Already looking forward to that. Just on a side note, all signs point towards Mike Cammalleri testing free agency. The Flames have too much money tied up into their core players with the addition of Olli Jokinen. He will be a possibility at the right price.
My quick thoughts on Guerin. He was obviously not the Penguins first choice. Once a couple deals fell through, Penguins moved on to Guerin. Adding him for a conditional pick is a low risk move ( very good price, considering the Islanders were receiving a 2nd round pick from Washington last week). Guerin will provide leadership and could be an asset on the power play. Penguins have lacked a right handed shot down low all season. He should help in that department.
The Penguins will use Billy Guerin on Sidney Crosby’s line right off the bat when Crosby is healthy. The perfect role at this time of his career may be playing a third line role and top power play time — how the Devils are using Brendan Shanahan this season.
I know Guerin wasn’t playing with much talent in New York but he only has three goals since December 27th, 2008. He started out the season very strong then cooled off in the second half. Brendan Shanahan sort of did the same thing last year.
Are Penguins where they were at this time last year? Absolutely not but with the additions of Kunitz and Guerin they are in better shape than they were a month ago.
4:55 p.m. A Quick Recap on a few things — Of all the former players the Penguins have been linked too in the past 48 hours, the closest to something happening was Jarkko Ruutu. Talks picked up again today and into the afternoon. A deal for Alexander Frolov was never close from either side. A couple deals are believed to have fallen through and Guerin who the Penguins have been in on since January, ended up with him.
4:53 p.m. – Miroslav Satan was sent down to Wilkes Barre.
4:39 p.m. РWith Chris Neil off the board, San jose stepped up to the plate for Travis Moen. Pittsburgh, Vancouver and Florida were also believed to be in on Moen. One more trade may be coming in and that will be it.

3:55 p.m. – There’s talk Eric Cole was traded for Patrick O’Sullivan.
3:48 p.m. – Was waiting to hear on Travis Moen and the Penguins didn’t get him as he was dealt to San Jose.
3: 09 p.m. РFew other moves coming in. Dominic Moore traded to Buffalo, Eric Christensen traded to Anaheim. Reports of Chris Neil being traded to Florida are false.

2:00 p.m. – The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired Bill Guerin. The PIT/NYI talks have been going on for over 6 weeks now and it took the two sides until the last day of the trade deadline to strike a deal. This deal doesn’t happen if Michel Therrien is still the teams coach.

1:15 p.m. – This just in — Penguins offered 2nd round pick/roster player for Nik Antropov early this morning. Could be others involved. This could be a sign that deals for bigger name players fell through today because I didn’t think Penguins would move on Antropov because of the asking price. Stay tuned. Waiting to hear if their offer is still being considered.
1:04 p.m. – Sounds like Chicago is focusing on Jeff Halpren and Dominic Moore. That takes them out of the Antropov sweepstakes…………
12:56 p.m. – Garth Snow is scrambling to move Bill Guerin ever since a deal fell through the Capitals. All signs point towards the Penguins not getting back involved but there has been interest since January. If i hear something on that front I’ll post it.

11:53 a.m. – Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Grant Lewis (from Upper St. Clair) could be traded to Tampa Bay according to a source close to Lewis. The Lightning wanted to draft him in 04 and are making a play for him now. Lewis the Thrashers 2nd round pick (2004) had 15 minutes of ice time yesterday for the Thrashers.
11:52 a.m. – Penguins make minor trade with St. Louis. Penguins acquire Andy Wozniewski from St. Louis for Danny Richmond. Wozniewski, 28, (6-5, 225 lbs) appeared in one game this season with St. Louis. He had a total of 6:44 of ice time.
11: 40 a.m. – I’m hearing same teams that we’ve been mentioning awhile are kicking the tires on Marty St. Louis — Rangers, Penguins, Oilers

11:01 a.m. – A source tells me the Penguins have been offered a 2nd round pick for a defenseman on their roster that will be a free agent at the end of the season. Likely Gill, but there has also been calls about Scuderi. The offer came from a Western Conference team. Will have more in a bit.
10:58 a.m. The asking prices for Bill Guerin and Mark Recchi remain high ( 2nd round picks). Rangers would like to make a play for either player but the Rangers are having a difficult time to clear enough space for Guerin.

10:30 a.m. – If the Minnesota Wild are offered anything reasonable for Marian Gaborik, they will move him.
10:24 p.m. – As mentioned yesterday, Av’s are trying to talk Milan Hejduk into waiving his NTC. They want to move his salary and Smyth.
10: 22 a.m. – Jonathan Cheechoo and Christian Erhoff are being packaged for a major deal.
