Steelers Morning Buzz
— Camp Buzz: Players report to camp today before 3:00 p.m. and the first practice gets underway at 2:55 p.m. on Friday. The players will have a conditioning test at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.
Our lead Steelers beat writer Dale Grdnic will be on the scene with daily Practice and Camp reports.
— The Steelers interest in Plaxico Burress is serious. While the team has yet to discuss contract numbers with agent Drew Rosenhaus, they are doing their due dilligence.
The Steelers who usually don’t publicly comment on free agents, did today as Steelers President Art Rooney II was on with DVE radio in the 8:00 a.m. hour and Rooney said that the team is “doing research” on Burress.
Rooney said he didn’t know where it’s going to go but they want to see where his head is and such. Burress for now is scheduled to meet with head coach Mike Tomlin on Saturday.
The coaching staff not only believes Burress can be a serious weapon as a situational receiver, but ownership believes Pittsburgh is the type of environment that can help Burress turn his life around.
One thing Burress didn’t do was burn any bridges with the Steelers during his time here.
–Things are said to be moving along on the contract front for LaMarr Woodley. Strong indications a new long-term deal that will be among the top 3-4 richest contracts in Steelers history, is going to be finalized soon.
The Steelers priority is getting the deal finalized before August 4th.
— Have yet to hear anything new on Willie Colon this morning. Late last night was told by a source directly involved in the negotiations that there was expectations of reaching an agreement with a particular team by late morning, early afternoon.
When the Steelers want a player back and the player wants to come back, it usually gets done but the two sides “weren’t there yet” as of late last night.
— The Steelers are expecting to have deals with most if not all of their draft picks finalized by the afternoon.
