Reports indicate Henrik Zetterberg is close to signing a long-term deal with the Detroit Red Wings. The deal is believed to be $7 million per season over 10 years. The Wings will have their two super stars (Zetterberg/Datsyuk) signed for a cap hit of only $13.67 million per season if Zetterberg signs for $7 million per season. Compare that to Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby who combine for a cap hit of $17.4 million per season. Datsyuk and Zetterberg could easily command $8.5 million per season on the open market and that’s what I call a hometown discount.
The Red Wings have had brief discussions with Ritch Winter the agent for Marian Hossa. Johan Franzen is expected to test free agency and is going to be a tough negotiator for the Red Wings.
Brendan Shanahan scored in his first game of the season with the New Jersey Devils Monday night. Shanahan played on the fourth line, saw some power play time and recorded 6 shots on goal. Shanahan signed a one year 800k pro-rated deal. Shanahan has a cap hit of slightly less than 400k.

The Panthers were recently in Pittsburgh scouting the Penguins/Capitals game and had their eye on Michael Nylander and Brooks Laich. Prospect Anton Gustafsson is also on the Panthers radar. The asking price will be steep for Bouwmesster. The Panthers are believed to be looking for a 4-for-1 return. Impact player/roster player/mid-top tier prospect/1st round pick
