The Pirates biggest free agent signing this off-season maybe Craig Counsel or David Eckstein. As first reported yesterday by Ken Rosenthal the Pirates are interested in Eckstien and have now turned their attention to Counsel and Eckstein after missing out on Mark Loretta. That will put seats in the building!
Things are looking more likely that Jack Wilson will be the Pirates starting shortstop on opening day. There was a deal in place with the Detroit Tigers but the Tigers backed out and moved on to a cheaper alternative in Adam Everett . The Dodgers are definitely out of running despite what some local reports may say. They will not be acquir The Orioles and Indians have been on the outside. The Indians are a major longshot to get involved for Wilson. The Orioles in need of a shortstop are currently targeting shortstop Cesar Izturis according to ESPN analyst Steve Phillips.
What about the Twins?
The Twins are currently exploring the possibility of acquiring Wilson but he is not at the top of their wishlist. The Twins main focus in the off-season was on Casey Blake who resigned with the LA Dodgers. The Twins are now believed to be pursuing Rockies third baseman Garret Atkins in a trade. The Twins and Rays have been in talks about outfielder Delmon Young but according to reports a third team may be needed to finalize the trade. Colorado could be that team. Jayson Stark reports the Rays may move 25 yr old pitcher Andy Sonnanstine (13 wins – 9 losses) for Young. The Twins could then turn around and deal Sonnanstine to Colorado for Atkins.
The Pirates have recently held talks with the Marlins, Cardinals, Braves, Twins, and Yankees about possible trades.
The Braves are intriquing. As reported about a month ago, the Pirates have been very high on 2b Kelly Johnson. Braves have linked to Ian Snell for a while.
