Huntington hints at Maholm’s future?
It was no secret that the Pirates were actively trying to move Paul Maholm during last July’s trade deadline and nearly had a deal in place that would have sent Maholm to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 2011, Maholm is a key to the Pirates having any shot of staying competitive but with a…
$9.75 million club option in 2012 and only a $750,000 buyout, his future with the Pirates is murky at best.
“We need Paul to go back to 08 and Correia to 09, ” Pirates GM Neal Huntington said during his weekly radio show today on what needs to happen for his ballclub to be successful this season.
What was interesting about Huntington’s comments was a just a few seconds later, when Huntington mentioned if Maholm doesn’t get back to his 2008 level (9-9, 3.71 ERA), than “the team has decisions to make.”
Either way they do.
Maholm is making $5.75 million this season and has expressed an interest in discussing an extension.
