The Pittsburgh Penguins have an excess amount of defensemen with the addition of Jordan Leopold and according to a source close to Jay McKee, it is an uneasy time for the 13 year veteran who could fall to No. 7 on the depth chart or be traded.
According to the source, McKee is hopeful to remain with the Penguins but knows that the possibility of being moved is out there as indications are one member of the Penguins current top-7 will be moved before Wednesday’s trade deadline.
McKee who signed with the Penguins to win a championship, is likely to fall to No. 7 on the depth chart, despite having the 3rd best plus/minus rating among defenseman on the team and leading the Penguins in blocked shots with 127, which ranks 9th in the league despite missing 8 games this season.
McKee’s camp has not been given any indication that a trade is in the works but McKee is drawing interest around the league and some believe that Pittsburgh would move McKee for a 3rd round pick.
One source tells me, due to the respect Ray Shero has for McKee, he would likely try to explore a trade for McKee than have him sit in the press box on a nightly basis when you can make an argument that McKee has played better than Alex Goligoski for example.
However, Goligoski is not going to sit.
Pittsburgh is still debating their next move regarding their excess group of defenseman.
