Acquired in the Jake Guentzel trade, Ponomarev was far from a lock of making the NHL roster out of camp as prospects like a Tristan Broz passed Ponomarev up on the organizational depth chart going into the summer. The 23-year-old native of Moscow, Russia, was the 53rd overall pick of the 2020 draft (CAR) and had no points in seven NHL games with the Penguins last season.
