The Pittsburgh Penguins on the futures front had one of the best stories of the weekend with drafting of the Ruck twins in Round 1 and 2 but the at the NHL level for next year’s roster specifically they got left at the altar. Let’s call it what it was. Plain and simple it was a dud week for the Penguins but as the weekend progressed it wasn’t without trying. The massive news of the week was Elliotte Friedman reporting Seattle got permission from the Dallas Stars on Thursday to try to reach a sign-and-trade deal with winger Jason Robertson who decided to decline an 8 year, $125 million offer believed to be for geographic reasons, though, some continue to believe his preference is to remain on the west coast.

Talk around the Penguins Friday night was a revolving theme around Kyle Dubas where rival executives continued to contend Dubas has been too cautious on the market and often waiting for the perfect deal to fall into his lap, hence overvaluing his group of prospects and draft picks he’s accumulated. Dubas blamed the lack of top-10 picks, though, some around the league don’t by it. What’s been missing is a go-in mindset. “There were multiple top-10 picks moved, which isn’t overly common,” Dubas said. “We would have aspired to be involved in every one of those conversations.”
