The Chicago Cubs are widely regarded by MLB executives as a favorite to sign Russell Martin, and Jon Heyman of CBSSports is the latest MLB Insider to confirm that the Cubs are targeting Martin, who is seeking a five year deal.
The Cubs looking to make a big splash this off-season, will also target top free agent pitchers Jon Lester and Max Scherzer, including trade target Cole Hamels, Heyman reports. With a chance to be a winner rather quickly, the Cubs figure to be an attractive destination for Martin.
The Cubs are the primary team Pirate officials privately fear will outbid the rest of the field for Martin.
Others already linked to Martin include the Dodgers, Blue Jays and possibly the Red Sox. Boston, though, does not give out long-term deals (5+ years) to players in their 30’s.
The Texas Rangers who hired Jeff Banister as manager, are another team that could be front and center in the Martin sweepstakes.
