AROUND THE BASES
Johnny Cueto didn’t drop the ball this afternoon. Cueto pitched his way to a complete game shutout, leading the Reds (6-9) to a 4-0 shutout win over the Pirates (7-8). Cueto threw a career-high 12 strikeouts in the win. He allowed just 3 hits and walked none.
Pittsburgh dropped their second straight series and have lost five of six games. Pittsburgh ends a nine game road trip, 3-6.
In dropping two of three to the Reds, the Pirates did not get strong starting pitching from Wandy Rodriguez and Gerrit Cole to open the series. It appeared that would continue today when Francisco Liriano was a disaster in the first inning but Liriano rebounded and was okay, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs in 7 innings. Liriano struck out 7 and walked 3. Liriano has posted 28 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched this season.
The Pirates begin an eight game home stand Thursday night vs Milwaukee.
