• A nearly 3 hour rain delay saw Gerrit Cole not take the mound until around 10:00 p.m. vs the Reds on Wednesday night. Cole had an up and down start, allowing five hits and three runs in five innings. Cole allowed a first inning home run to Todd Frazier and also let in a run with a wild pitch in the third inning. Cole struggled with his command, throwing 56 strikes on 93 pitches. Cole struck out 6 and walked 2 in the Pirates 5-4 loss. Manager Clint Hurdle liked Cole’s battle level. “He had to battle,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “His first-pitch strikes were off, yet he got a good number of outs on three pitches or less, so it was a mix. We would’ve liked to get more length from him, but he gave it everything he had.”
