The good news continues to roll in for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After much fretting in the organization that Evgeni Malkin would need major surgery this summer, a final determination has been made that Malkin will avoid elbow surgery.
The team announced this morning Malkin will not miss any time for the upcoming season.
The Malkin situation now gives the Penguins clarity heading into the draft and free agency.
If Matt Cullen retires, the Penguins are comfortable going in-house with Oskar Sundqvist sliding in as the 4th line center. Surgery for Malkin would have had the Penguins considering outside options.

So even though I’m not a big fan of making predictions, this one is so bold I don’t mind being wrong when it doesn’t come true, the Fleury situation will cause a divide between Rutherford and Sullivan that will put Sullivan’s job in jeopardy. Ya I find this to be a little sensationalized. Sullivan’s changes were evident is so many ways. A good GM will trust his coach, especially after they win. I imagine JR will be cautious but I really struggle to believe we will see this kind of difference of opinion… Sullivan is Rutherfords guy, he brought him in and made the decision to bring him up.
If Sullivan wants to keep his job, he better get smart and realize that “his guys” need to be Crosby, Malkin and Letang not his minor leaguers who he spent half a season with. If the overwhelming input from those 3 is they want to roll with Fleury, he should get on board.

I don’t agree with the, lets see how rehab goes idea with Malkins elbow. I’d prefer if he had the surgery now and came back in March and ready to go for a playoff run. So now if he attempts to play and we’re in November, his rehab fails and the elblow requires surgery now, you lost him for the rest of the year and potentially the playoffs. I’d rather he miss the games that don’t matter the first 3 months of the season and just tell Sid his 3 month vacation is postponed till Malkin comes back.
Thinking Malkin could be out until March and then return for the playoffs and be an asset just isn’t realistic, no player takes 9-10 months off a comes back day 1 in top game shape, surgery now pretty much guarantees he misses all of next season because he won’t be worth shit for the first month or so that he returns, with rehab there’s at least hope you get something out of him next year.

Playoffs start at the mid to end of April. So he’ll have a month to get ready. I’d much rather go with the sure fire fix for his injury with the potential to miss less important games vs cross your fingers and hope that he is ready for less important games risking his ability to play the most important games.

Made a mistake, the forwards would equal 44.166. Coupled with Dupuis’ contract (3.75) would put the Pens over the Cap by approx $800k.
Yeah I have no idea where this notion that the Pens needed to clear cap space started, even before the raise in the cap the Pens had the room to return the entire roster minus Cullen/Lovejoy/Shultz and still had room to make some moves to fill out the depth if they felt the need.
Although I do think that your lineup is slightly off, now that Porter has been resigned I would expect him to be the #13 guy and the odd young guy out(Wilson/Kuhnkackl/Sheary) who still has waiver eligiblity would go to WBS.

Campbell may just sign a one year contract so he’s not exposed to the expansion draft. No one is going to give him a NMC with term given his age.
Campbell would be stupid to sign for term. he’s guaranteed to be exposed. And he’s made enough money that he doesn’t need to lock in earnings.
Why? especially on a one year deal?
To me if he’s signing with a contender their not going to protect him during the expansion draft. He’s putting himself at risk from going to a contender to a bottom feeder for the remainder of his career. Signing a one year deal negates being exposed and after the draft he can sign with the same team or another of his choosing.
