Pirates today fired third base coach Rick Sofield, ending a four year run as the Pirates third base coach.

The move will be welcomed by the fan base as Sofield was a lightning rod for criticism.

The 59 year old baseball veteran, though, is highly regarded throughout the Majors. Sofield was a finalist to become the San Diego Padres manager last winter.
