Friday’s Penguins Buzz
The Penguins return from the five day bye break and have recalled goaltender Tristan Jarry and defenseman Chad Ruhwedel.
Ruhwedel has passed Derrick Pouliot on the organizational depth chart and has been a stronger fit in the transition game than Pouliot. Ruhwedel has 1 goal and 1 assist and a +3 rating in five games.
The Penguins have reached the point again with Pouliot where they just want him playing regularly in the American Hockey League and it’s clear to many his future with this coaching staff is pretty much bleak.
The talk in Penguin circles prior to the season is that the management team looked at this still as somewhat of a development year for Pouliot again with hopes that he could transition into Trevor Daley’s long-term replacement for next season.
There’s little evidence that’s still the plan.
The player hasn’t demanded a trade yet but wants a fresh start under a coaching staff that has zero confidence in him to play his own end at a capable NHL level.
It’s becoming clear where things are headed.
The Penguins are getting calls on Pouliot and as expected teams aren’t willing to offer much but there is interest from clubs that still see some upside, sources say.

Teams that would be good to avoid for pens in playoffs Habs, jackets and believe it or not leafs too if they make playoffs they can upset the pens if they get solid goaltending. First 10 games Andy wasn’t playing that good if leafs had better goaltending they would’ve be in playoffs now. Watched a bunch of their games yes they lack a lot of experience but at times when they are playing their system they are one hard team to play against
I would argue defence has been a bigger issue. While Andersen got off to the slow start he has been significantly better since (minus his last two starts lol). The Leafs have blown several leads this year… that’s not on the goaltending.
Agree with what you said but I believe they lead league with shots and first period goals and in playoffs starting strong can hurt other teams that waits 3rd period to wake up or depend on power plays.
And good thing about leafs they don’t have too many expensive players if only they can get rid of that bum Lupul
He is far from a bum, he was just shut down by injury. He started the year on the IR and it’s possible his career is over so he is pretty much zero impact on their cap.

Yeah polak can’t keep up with the new hockey he should’ve just retired after he played for the blues. Hockey changed before u needed those tough defense now it’s more about perfect positioning and block shots u have always players in front of net and no one touching them in order not to get penalties. That’s why players like polak,phaneuf become useless
Game has slowed a bit since Phaneufs rookie year so its not that. I just think he set the bar very high as a rookie in a year where the mistakes going for the big hit were forgivable because he was a kid. He never grew out of the kind of play and it causes him to play inconsistently. If you piss him off he will try and run you which takes him out of position and he is prone to be careless with the puck. Yeah but with sens he is not their top guy you have #3 and #65 before him while with leafs he was the number 1 guy and yes game has changed but it’s more a systematic game which one small mistake can cost you goals and put you out of position which pens had same problem with Orpig . It was a nightmare to watch orpig and engo with the pens
Last few years I’ve said a a good system team can win it all you don’t need 10m dollar all star lineups. Yes it does help here and there to have that big dollar star but with good system it’s not a necessity anymore it’s just a luxury. Which kinds worries me because there is big chance pens might not win Stanley this year and average fans will disappointed specially when u look at pens 1 power play unit and the fact they might choke in playoffs that’s a lot of money invested on 1St pp unit with 71,87,81,58 and,72

You equate salary with the calibur and unfortunately timing plays a role. Both Kane and Toews were 10 million dollar salaries had at a discount because their GM had the presence of mind to lock them up for term at what ended up a somewhat discounted rate. Same thinks you can win with a team of grinders. Pretty much every team that wins has stars on it who get paid accordingly. If same here a GM, he would field a team that may do well in the ECHL
Shero could’ve gave bridge contract to malkin and sid and maybe won a few more cups just like Hawks did instead right away he gave big contract to sid and geno but what really cost Shero’s job was the extension contract given to DB with a raise instead of firing him

Orpiks game was never really strong with the puck. He was an anchor defenceman that made people look twice before going into the corners. As the possession game became more important the fact that he wasnt strong with the puck became more obvious.
