Latest on Phil Kessel
As reported here in the immediate aftermath of the Penguins ouster in Round 2, the organization is operating with only three untouchables on the roster;
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Matt Murray with Jake Guentzel, Brian Dumoulin and Patric Hornqvist about as close as you can get to being an untouchable this summer.
Along with Crosby, Malkin and Fleury, they’re going nowhere.
What the Penguins are — is wide open for business on winger Phil Kessel and to a slightly lesser extent Kris Letang. —
Where things stand with those two is the Penguins have begun approaching teams on Kessel ahead of pro scouting meetings next week and into the following week for multiple clubs of what the Penguins would seek in a Kessel trade.
Two scenarios have been put out there by the Penguins, per a league source:
1. They’re seeking a James Neal – Patric Hornqvist type swap, moving Kessel for a more well rounded 200 ft player, which a source characterized as the Penguins primary goal in shopping Kessel. In the right deal for an impact player in return, Pittsburgh is also said to be open to keeping a small percentage of the Kessel contract.

Orpiks goal holds up as the winner, Pens should have kept him. His grit and ability to get in the face of the opposition is missed and he scored tonight so clearly he was the missing piece of the 2018 Pittsburgh Penguins, they lost because Orpik wasn’t here!

Get rid of Letang, Sheary and some other bad signings but we all know Letang is not going anywhere. I think there was an impression from the Hawks that it was internal discussions that led to Panarin being given up on as opposed to other moved made to retain him. Toews was a fan of his game on his wing and may have played a role. Take that fwiw as it could just be net rumours but I heard it quite a lot

@Carramod I’m no Hawks expert but Breadman & Saad make the exact same amount – $6M per year. So there was no savings by doing the trade with CBJ. My understanding for the trade was due to the loss of Hossa… they wanted someone who had a more solid 200ft game rather than 1 dimensional. Hossa like Bergeron was a fantastic 2way Fwd & when they lost him & the D-core aging they need help behind their own Blueline. Agreed. I like Kessel, he was huge in 2 cups but has somehow become the scapgoat here. That said, unlike some of the idiots that post (-5am, just incase we needed a reminder), I will welcome any move that actually improves the roster. I am not sold that Kessel moving improves the roster vs the names above. If they find a taker and it saves a couple million but the Pens dont get royally hosed then so be it. However Sprong is on the team next yr per JR so hopefully he can produce 25 pts & you get a Smith for 2.55M less than Kessel at 50pts you’re close & with money to spend.
