Rumors continue to swirl regarding a major deal that fell through for the Penguins with Alex Goligoski and others being rumored as being involved.

“Did the firing of Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michel Therrien scuttle a possible trade between the Pens and Toronto Maple Leafs? Leafs general manager Brian Burke denied he has been talking to the Penguins about shipping out forward Nik Antropov, but there were whispers something may have been close last weekend.”
“One possibility bandied about had Antropov swapped for Penguins defenceman Ryan Whitney. Another option was a first-round selection and young blueliner Alex Goligoski in exchange for Antropov. There also was belief that if the Penguins acquired Antropov, he may have been used as part of a package for a trade to the Atlanta Thrashers for scoring whiz Ilya Kovalchuk and Colby Armstrong. ‚Ķ Veteran Curtis Joseph backed up Justin Pogge last night.”
True or False? — Absolutely False
GM’s Don’t always tell the truth but on this one Brian Burke is. The Penguins were not going to move Ryan Whitney, Alex Goligoski or even Jordan Staal for Nik Antropov. Shero values those players very highly.
Regarding Kovalchuk, he is on a list of players the Penguins would like to pursue if he becomes available but why would the Thrashers want Nik Antropov who would bolt via free agency. Makes no sense
Based on what I’ve been able to gather the past couple weeks a player with a NTC would not waive his NTC which is believed to be the major deal that fell through. Antropov does not have a NTC.
I’m shooting down this rumor
Burke is believed to be seeking a 1st round pick for Antropov.
