Olsen tagged for one run in spring debut
Showing up to spring training out of shape and dealing with a lingering hamstring injury, starting pitcher Scott Olsen is not a lock to open the season as the Pirates No. 5 starter.
Olsen has strong competition from Charlie Morton (2 GS – 8 IP) who leads all Pirates starters with a 2.25 ERA this spring.
Olsen today made his spring training debut, allowing 1 run on 2 hits (home run, double) in 1 inning of work in the Pirates 8-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon. Olsen threw 7 strikes on 11 pitches this afternoon.
Also making his debut today was left handed reliever Joe Beimel who allowed 3 runs ( 1 earned) on 4 hits in 1 inning pitched. Beimel gave up a solo homer in the 7th inning and struck out 2, while walking none.
Starter Kevin Correia (0-2, 7.42 ERA) took the loss for the Pirates, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings pitched. Correia has not had a strong spring thus far.
Andrew McCutchen continues his excellent spring, collecting 2 hits and a stolen base in the loss. McCutchen is batting .355.
Pedro Alvarez was 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts. He is batting .263.
