Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero announced the Penguins have signed head coach Michel Therrien to a 1 year extension through the 2008-2009 season. The deal is believed to be worth 800k per season. The offer has been on the table for over a month as Therrien was seeking a 2-3 year extension. A absolutely smart move by the Penguins. Therrien had no leverage in the negotiations and why sign a coach to a long term extension when the teams General Manager is not sold on him being the coach who can take the team to the next level. The ball is in Therrien’s court to improve upon last season and take the Penguins beyond the first round. The 07-08 season will be a big year for management to see if Therrien is the long term coach. If he does then he will get his long term extension he is seeking. But for now, take it one year at a time.
