Inside Pittsburgh Sports has confirmed, despite little to no cap space, the Penguins are making a surprise play for 34 year old winger Dan Cleary. Craig Custance of ESPN first reported the Penguins interest.
Word is the Penguins have a multi-year offer on the table to Cleary who is considering offers from Detroit and an unknown team.

Cleary, 34, made $3 million last season.
Cleary a strong playoff performer and role player, had 4 goals and 10 points in 14 playoff games. He had 9 goals and 15 points in 48 games in the regular season.
