The Pittsburgh Penguins have reassigned defenseman Philip Samuelsson and forward Pierre-Luc Leblond to Wilkes Barre/Scranton this morning, the team announced
Both players will be put on waivers at 12:00 p.m. and have to clear waivers by Tuesday afternoon before they can report to WBS. Samuelsson the Penguins second round pick in 2009 and son of Ulf Samuelsson, has made great strides over the last couple years in his development, scouts believe he can play at the NHL level, but his upside is nothing more than a No. 6 / No. 7 defenseman and has fallen victim to a numbers game in Pittsburgh and a deep group of prospects on the blueline.

It won’t surprise some if Samuelsson is claimed on waivers but the Penguins are comfortable if they lose him due to the development of Reid McNeil who can fill Samuelsson’s role down in Wilkes Barre and a possible emergency callup.
