The Pedro Alvarez era is over.
After failing to find one trade suitor for Alvarez, the Pirates have officially non-tendered Alvarez, making him a free agent.
The news is not surprising as everyone in baseball knew the Pirates were prepared to move on from Alvarez.
President Frank Coonelly on the Pirates non-tendering Alvarez: [hide]
Cubs signed Zobrist. And the Pirates continue to sit there masturbating.
But to be fair, that doesn’t look like a good deal for them.
Kyle Kendrick
lololololololololololololololololololol
Yikes. Hope that would be a minor league deal for depth purposes.
Might as well bring Clayton Richard back.
Damn, the Cubs may have Arrieta, Lester, Lackey, Hammel AND Shelby Miller in their rotation.
*cricket cricket cricket*
To even things out a bit, if the Pirates are pursuing Mitch Moreland as is rumored, that’d be a nice little get depending on price. Rumor out of Dallas newspapers is that Charlie Morton might make some sense going the other way – won’t speak to the validity of that, but would certainly be a big help at 1B. One more year of control for Moreland.
Moreland would be a good add.
Rumor they want Elias Diaz pee mlbtraderumors
Wouldn’t give up Diaz, but like the idea of a Moreland/Morton swap. Fill out the rotation with Kazmir and Masterson (and if the latter sucks, Glasnow come June).
Substance! Bravo. Morton leaving and Moreland coming in would be great. SP would be dangerously thin, but im tired of Morton’s flashes only to see him implode.
And or injured
Oh – there’s been substance – just not substance you enjoy hearing. You need more of why Andrew Lambo made sense.
I enjoy hearing from Angry Drunk Uncle Stanchy. It’s comical because he’s so passionate about what he says, yet its rarely grounded in reality.
The only reality you know is eating uncle bob’s shit.
Ouch. Brutal. The attempted joke, that is. Please, try again.
If the Pirates were smart, and actually wanted to win, they’d probably look into signing one of these mega-deals and getting a second Ace in here, with the full intention of just trading said player in 2-3 years when their “strike while the iron is hot” mode is over, and thus further utilizing said player to help augment their rebuild. But, they’re not overly smart. And it would also take Nutting putting his money where his mouth is, which he’s not really okay with doing. Who gives a shit if you had signed David Price for 7 years if you… Read more »
98 wins, but let’s trust you. Lol
98 wins and missed the playoffs. Why don’t you comment on the merits of what I posted rather than pretending you’re Sam.
Im focused on the “if the pirates were smart” part. Its a dumb statement to make regarding a team that made the playoffs three years in a row. Maybe instead start with, “when i play MLB 15, I do this…” Oddly enough, your statements would be taken more seriously that way.
So, like I said, pretending to be Sam. Can’t make head’s or tails out of what you’re reading. Focused on the wrong thing. You might as well throw in a “hot dog cart” comment. I don’t own a video game system, as I’m not 15 year old, but it certainly explains so much on the other end. Perhaps if you weren’t a ridiculous shill for all things Pirates, your statements would be taken more seriously. I’m still laughing at your “I’m okay with Lambo at first base” nonsense from two years back. It doesn’t matter how much Bob Nutting shits… Read more »
I was ok with Lambo. Hindsight says thats ridiculous but he was coming off a 30+ HR season in AAA. You gotta give the guy a shot, like they did. And btw, they STILL made the playoffs after upgrading the position midseason.
Stanch, your point goes out the window, you use the phrase “if they want to win” which throughout this post you discredit….. 98 wins dont count as “actual wins” the way you make it sound. Maybe you should blame nutting for us playing in the NL central? After all thats the goal right? Make Nutting, who has been nothing but supportive of huntingtons plan, out to be Cam Bonifay. Let me reiterate for those who continue to want to blame nutting… he did not become majority owner (the decision maker) until 2006. Ironically the same time drafting money increased, international… Read more »
All these moves, and the Pirates are just sitting here masturbating
pedro was the weirdest player ever.
Anyone else wishing El Toro great success in the AL?! I really hope he shoves this down Buccos’ brass…and many so called Bucco fans…throats! Maybe I’m the crazy one, but you mess with the Bull…well you know the rest…God speed Pedro!
Stengel, how does success in the AL shove it down anyone’s throat. Excellent DH candidate, a role non existent in the NL….. good call.
A lot if his HRs were solo shots if I remember correctly.
Every year Pittsburghfan jumps off the bandwagon in December… last year with Martin (Cervelli went on to have a better WAR), the year before with Melancon taking over for “hammer.” and prior to crying over jumping jacks and fast freddie sanchez. Its December, the rotation is the last thing I am worried about. and we have made the playoffs the last 3 years (we made playoffs) with the following starting first baseman on opening day being Overbay, Ike davis/ishakawa, and Pedro/Lambo. Talent is not in FA, its on development. How’s that Linccum contract look? Hows Jacoby doing? meanwhile arrietta at… Read more »
They made the playoffs? I mean, they made a play in game, and lost it. That game is a playoff game the same way the Tuesday night March Madness games are part of the tournament.
They made the playoffs. Pretty hard to discredit a 98 win team.
It’s easy to discredit – if you consider that a playoff game, they were in the “playoffs” for roughly three innings. Impressive. But me? I don’t watch the Tuesday night “tournament” games either. And I don’t waste my time with play-in games. Call me when you accomplish something. I did watch the playoff series they actually participated in with the Cards a few years back though. Was cool to see them in the playoffs again.
Sure focus on that Stanch, anyone who is over 20 years old should have more of an appreciation for what they have done the last 3 years…. and to your point, if we can make the playin game and lose with him, pretty sure we can do that without him. Most errors at 1B since 1999
I’m not arguing they should have kept El Toro. I think letting him walk was the right call. Can they make the play in game without him? Sure. But they sure have some heavy lifting to do. Off season isn’t over, but this team has moves it needs to make just to get to where they were. Cards and Cubs aren’t taking a step back next year. Pirates surely could be.
Comparing the playin game in the NCAA field of 68 is a little different than an MLB field of 5. They had the 2nd best record in the majors in one of the toughest divisions in recent memory. Since were doing unnecessary comparisons, thats equivalent to a one seed in the NCAA tournament. You had a nice visual to carry your point, but it really doesnt make sense.
The number of teams have nothing to do with it. It’s the same concept. It carries with it the same allure. Game 163. Whoopee. It seems you’re not stranger to slapping some lipstick on a pig and telling your friends how pretty she is.
If i had to sell my friends on a chick whose looks are the equivalent of a 98-win team in baseball, the lipstick wouldn’t be necessary, but a brighter audience would be.
You would if 98 wins wasn’t good enough and they missed the playoffs. Maybe you’re just a chubby chaser.
98 wins, Pirates didnt make the playoffs. 90 wins, Mets make the World Series. Use your brain.
Yeah – tis a shame. But hey, sometimes 98 wins doesn’t get you a division, and instead of making the playoffs, it only earns you the right to play one more game for the chance to get in. And then in that one game, you shit down your leg so bad that your entire fan base doesn’t have to miss a minute of Seinfeld re-runs because the game is over 35 minutes after it starts.
Lol “sometimes 98 wins doesnt get you a division.” Like when else?
Lol like this year. Lol. Oh, and lol. What are you, a 14 year old girl? #lol
Right, just this year. Thank you for proving that by ignoring the question and resorting to discussing my use of “lol,” a widely used acronym on the Internet. Cmon stanchy, the grumpy old man act is getting as outdated as you. #humbug
Right, in that it doesn’t fucking matter how often it happens. They couldn’t win their division. You go on about this 98 wins like they give a trophy out for it. They don’t. They should hang up a “98 win season” banner – I’m sure you’d basically nut in your pants. Nobody else really cares.
Poor Stanchy. I go on and on about a 98 win season because it discredits anything you try to say and its clearly working, evident by you getting so angry because your narrative of “the Pirates were not a playoff team” and how they “need to be smarter” is easily disproved. Your hatred for the team gets in the way of something so simple. They were one of the best teams in the league last year, and for the past 3 years, they have the second most wins in all of baseball. They don’t need your angry drunk uncle theories… Read more »
One of the “best teams in baseball” haven’t won a division or playoff series in 25 years. Bravo. #lol
On paper maybe cards and cubs are getting better. Again this time last year they were doing the same thing. Martin, way more intriguel to the success was walking. Somehow pirates replaced that w a career backup. I don’t know who will play first, but pretty sure their people are smarter than u and I. And continue to earn the benefit of the doubt.
They clearly non-tendered Pedro because no one wanted him at that price. Yet, somehow, just the Pirates being cheap. Lol
Surprised we didn’t find a trade offer. What was the tender sub $10 million? As a DH I’d assume he gets atleast 10 a year. I guess only a few gm’s were interested and thought they could wait to get him for nothing. Pirates are making the right moves. You can’t sign Happ at 13/year. Would be interested in Samardzjia who might sign for that and has higher end stuff. Happ could be the dumbest signing of this UFA crop as his only strong performance was with the Pirates. Trust the process it is what is keeping us competitive. Even… Read more »
It certainly appears that the Pirates are going to be content taking a major step backwards. Possibly out of contention talk. I don’t say that out of anger for the loss of Pedro, he is a designated hitter who was playing in the wrong league. I say that because, at least to date, the Pirates have lost and will continue to lose more players with higher talent levels than they will replace them with…..Almost definitely!! So far, they have lost 2 starting pitchers, one who was a top end talent (AJ) and another who looked like a good mid-to back… Read more »
Theres been a grand total of 3 major moves made this offseason. But clearly the lineup thy have now is the same theyll have in April.
Not sure where you get the idea that Hanson doesn’t have Walker’s talent level, by all accounts Hanson is a superior players with the exception of power. While I don’t think Hanson is ready for a full time ML role just yet his numbers have been very comparable to Walker’s during their minor league time and Hanson has a higher ceiling. If Walker wasn’t from Gibsonia people would be begging for Hanson to take his spot.
Good call Jay. Hes an average 2B whose overvalued by fans because of where he grew up.
I don’t really follow the pirates farm system so any idea on who they are thinking is a replacement?
Eventually it’ll be Josh Bell.
“I’m so excited to see where they’re going to spend all of the cash they saved on Pedro!” -said no pirate fan, ever.
heard Pens interested in signing Pedro to replace Sid hoping to get more productivity from center position
Cant wait to see how they replace 27 hrs, the rest should be very possible
And every single draft person said he had the most hitting talent they’ve seen in a while when he was going to get elected. Just doesn’t always work out. Could’ve really used that potential
Bye Felicia!
