In minor moves today, the Pittsburgh Pirates completed trades with the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals.
From the Red Sox, Pittsburgh acquired RHP Zach Stewart in exchange for a player to be named later. Stewart who started the 2012 season in Chicago, posted an 8.58 ERA in 20 combined appearances with the Red Sox and White Sox. Stewart made 1 start in 18 games with the White Sox and 2 starts with the Red Sox, going 0-2 with a 22.24 ERA for Boston. Overall in 2012, Stewart pitched 35 2/3 innings, surrendering 34 runs and 14 homers. In 2011 with the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox, Stewart started 11 games, going 2-6 with a 5.88 ERA. He has been used in the bullpen and as a starter in his career.
From the Royals, Pittsburgh acquired RHP Vin Mazzaro and 1B Clint Robinson. Robinson, 27, hit .292 with 13 home runs, 67 RBIs, 37 doubles and 70 runs scored in 131 games for AAA Omaha last season. He is 0-4 at the plate in his career in the Majors. In 2012, Mazzaro went 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA and 5 saves in 22 games with AAA Omaha. Mazzaro, 26, saw some time with the Royals and went 4-3 with a 5.73 ERA in 18 appearences with Kansas City.
