As the NHL is developing into an NBA style landscape with stars demanding trades and dictating a move to the same three or four cities, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas over the last year has strongly valued specific players that want to be here. It carries a lot of weight. The Penguins went into the off-season with the mindset that the value of Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell will not change much from now to February. Multiple league executives and agents have predicted Pittsburgh will go into next season trying to compete with much of its core in place and see where the season stands come February. Essentially a 2023 summer type mindset, sources say. It was a discussion in the Evgeni Malkin contract talks where Pittsburgh by wanted specific language of trade options if the season goes south as Malkin has to submit a three-team trade list on February 1st.
