Height: 6′ 6″ , Weight: 220 lbs
2007, 1st round pick (22nd overall)
Scouting Report

Strengths: – Fastball tops out around 94MPH and is still developing
– Has a lot of movement
– Strongest pitch is his curve ball
– Regarded as having great command
– Breaking ball is developing
– Hard worker, regarded as a student of the game.
– Has a 94 MPH sinker, courtesy of John Perrotto
Weaknesses: – Mechanics need some work
What could keep him from being a #2 pitching/top of the rotation starter is his change up.
Analysis:
Immediately becomes the Pirates #2 prospect and their top pitching prospect. The velocity Alderson has in his fastball and breaking ball, gives him the opportunity to be a low end #2 starter.
From all indications, the development of his changeup will be the key.
He has the talent to be a consistent 15+ game winner. Prior to the trade for Alderson, the Pirates do not have a pitcher in their system that projects to be anything more than a #3 starter.
Potential: #2 starter.
