Steelers cut ties with high priced Allen

Anyone remember Cortez Allen was still on the roster?

Well he still was until this afternoon.

In what was a matter of “when” not if this off-season, the Steelers officially released Allen Friday afternoon.

Allen was due $4.4 million and carried a cap hit of $5.75 million, though, the decision to cut him was everything about the Steelers coaches believing Allen is damaged goods.

The 27 year old received a four year, $26 million extension that included a signing bonus of $6,750,000 on the eve of the 2014 season opener and it’s money the Steelers basically just threw in the dumpster.

Allen gave the Steelers nothing after the big extension, having a disastrous 2014 campaign that saw him booted out of the starting lineup and after failing to win a job out of camp this past season, Allen played 32 snaps in 2015 and didn’t finish the season due a knee injury.

Despite still being in his mid-20’s and receiving a big investment by Steelers standards when it comes to the cornerback position, the organization has known for months they were done with Allen and going to release him.

It was always just a matter of when.
