Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com calls the Pittsburgh Steelers a favorite to sign 29 year old receiver Steve Breaston. The Steelers are meeting with Breaston’s representatives today in Indianapolis and offensive coordinator Todd Haley continues to push hard for a possible reunion with Breaston who had 61 receptions in 2011 under Haley and a career best 1,006 receiving yards in 2008 with the Arizona Cardinals, Haley’s last season in Arizona as offensive coordinator.
The buzz in Indianapolis regarding the Steelers and Breaston is that Jerricho Cotchery’s future with the team could be tied to Breaston. Rumblings are Cotchery will be released were the Steelers to sign Breaston. Cotchery failed to become much of a fit in Haley’s system last season after a promising year in 2011, coming up with clutch plays and surpassing Hines Ward on the depth chart that season.
While there are some signs that the Steelers might be where Breaston would like to sign, a Steelers source expressed caution saying that as of early this afternoon no numbers have been discussed between the two sides and there’s at least some feeling in the organization that Breaston’s reps could be looking to play the Haley reunion/homecoming to Pittsburgh up {in the media} in an attempt to get a better deal elsewhere.
The Steelers will be limited money wise to sign Breaston who would be unlikely to match his $2.05 million salary from 2012 with the Steelers.
The Lions and Browns have also emerged as early suitors.
