Updated 7:05: The Steelers have signed first round pick Lawrence Timmons to a 5 year deal.

A anonymous source has revealed the Penguins have held discussions with defenseman David Tanabe within the past week. The anonymous source says a offer has been made from the Penguins and a decision is expected back from Tanabe this week. “We should hear by Wednesday if Tanabe will accept this offer”, according to the anonymous source.

The Penguins offer to Tanabe is believed to be a 1 year deal worth 900K.

The Boston Bruins have inquired about defenseman Mark Eaton

It’s been speculated for weeks that Troy Polamalu is expected to agree to a long term extension this week. Polamalu is seeking to become the leagues highest paid safety and the deal is expected to include up to 16-17 million in guaranteed money.

First round pick Lawrence Timmons is expected to be signed before camp beings tomorrow. The two sides exchanged proposals Saturday morning and appear to be very close.

Mike Tomlin is going to give right tackle Willie Colon every opportunity to win the starting right tackle position from Max Starks. It is believed after mini camp and the off season workouts, Colon has the edge but theres a reason they have training camp.

The Boston Red Sox have inquired about reliever Damso Marte. According to sources the Red Sox are the front runners to acquire Marte while the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees are also very interested.

The Pirates and Red Sox have held preliminary talks about Marte. David Littlefied has his sights set on prospect Jacob Ellsworthy. Ellsworthy is the Red Sox 2nd rated prospect according to most baseball people and everyone wonders why David Littlefield is so hard to deal with. The Pirates were obviously told Ellsworthy is not available according to a source. The Pirates were told Willy Mo Pena is available.

The Pirates and Rockies have held discussions about reliever Solomon Torres. The Pirates are interested in outfielder Ryan Spilbourghs from the Rockies. Detroit and Philadelphia have also inquired about Torres.

Jack Wilson is drawling minimal interest around MLB but Dejan Kovacevic reports that Toronto is interested in a deal for Jack Wilson. I can’t see Toronto trading for Wilson unless the Pirates eat half of his salary.

The Pirates are still telling teams Jason Bay is not available

There’s has been speculation that the Pirates are looking to move Ian Snell to acquire a bat according to John Perrotto of the Beaver Times. I have heard the Pirates are upset with Snell’s recent comments but on more than a couple occasions i have been told Snell and Gorzelanny are untouchable.
