The Pittsburgh Steelers and veteran offensive lineman Trai Essex have agreed to a one year deal at the league minimum. It is the Steelers third signing this week after agreeing to terms with tight end Leonard Pope and wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.
Essex the Steelers starting right guard in 2009, provides depth at all three positions on the line. Head coach Mike Tomlin has become a big fan of Essex due to his versatility and ability to step up as the next guy, filling in for Maurkice Pouncey at center last December. “Trai’s ability to play center was pivotal to our success, ” head coach Mike Tomlin said following the Steelers Christmas Eve win over St. Louis. “Special afternoon for Trai, ” Tomlin said about Essex’s performance against the Rams.
OG Doug Legrusky officially signed his restricted tender this morning, agent David Rich told Inside Pittsburgh Sports. Legursky has been told he will go into the season battling for the starting left guard job. All restricted free agents except Mike Wallace have signed their tenders. Tight end David Johnson signed his tender yesterday.
As things currently stand personnel wise, Pittsburgh starting O-line left to right would be LT Marcus Gilbert – LG Doug Legursky – C Maurkice Pouncey – RG Ramon Foster – RT Willie Colon
The O-line position though will be evolving depending on what the Steelers do in the draft, where guard and tackle are viewed as top priorities.
The team also hasn’t ruled out resigning Max Starks this summer if he checks out health wise.
