Weekly Recruiting Update

Penn State hopes to land their 17th commitment of the 2009 class this weekend when receiver Devon Smith 5ft7 – 150lb (Waldorf, Maryland) visits Penn State on Saturday. Smith would be Penn State’s 7th commitment from the state of Maryland. Smith has received four written offers but indications are he is down to Temple and Penn State

Penn State remains one of the top contenders to land OLB Jelani Jenkins (Wheaton, Maryland). Jenkins is a 5 star linebacker who has received over 40 scholarship offers. Penn State, USC, and Notre Dame are believed to be the top three contenders to land the talented linebacker.

Quarterback Kevin Newsome de-committed from Michigan in August and Penn State is getting serious consideration along with Virginia, Virginia Tech. Newsome hasn’t ruled out Michigan but will explore all his options.

Anthony LaLota a ‚Äú6ft6″ 260lb defensive end from New Jersey has been heavily recruited by Penn State and West Virginia but indications are from associates close to LaLota that he hasn’t ruled out Penn State but appears to be leaning towards committing to Florida.

Penn State hopes to land Wide Receiver Justin Brown ‚Äú6ft3″ Wt: 211 Wilmington, Delaware. Brown is a top talent that posses good size and has Penn State near the top of his list. Brown is not expected to make a decision until winter. University of Texas, South Carolina University and Rutgers University are also getting serious consideration from Brown.

West Virginia has made a written offer to linebacker Jordan Hicks West Chester, Ohio. Hicks is being heavily recruited by Florida and Ohio State

Pitt made Junior running back Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa) a written offer on Tuesday. Brown is also being recruited by Penn State.

6-7, 260-pound defensive end Gary Gilliam is strongly considering Penn State, Virginia, Pitt and UConn. Virginia and UConn have been the early favorites to land Gilliam but Gilliam has made two visits to Penn State and is expected to make an third in the near future. Pitt is on the outside according to a source.
