Mike Tomlin’s top project this off-season is wide receiver Limas Sweed. Tomlin is very high on Sweed and expects him to make a significant jump from year 1 to year 2.
Project #2 is 2008 third round draft pick Bruce Davis. Davis has bulked up this off-season and the Steelers have hopes of him making strides in year 2. There continues to be some rumblings that Davis needs a stronger commitment to be a successful NFL player. Big off-season for him
Hines Ward approached the Steelers in late March, expressing a strong interest in working out a two year extension before the season. The two sides will talk as training camp gets closer.
No progress on the Max Starks front. Talks are on-going and the two sides are hopeful that progress will be made following the draft. Steelers want to get that cap hit in the $5.5 million range.
We hear, Casey Hampton has a strong desire to finish his career in Texas (home-town), if

the Steelers and Hampton are unable to reach a deal before the season. No talks have taking place to this point.
Wide receiver in the first round is a long-shot but North Carolina wide out Hakeem Nicks appears to be the one wide receiver in the first round that will tempt the Steelers with the #32 pick.
Mixed opinions in the organization on Connecticut tackle Will Beatty and I’m hearing the Steelers see him as a major reach with the 32 pick. Some mock drafts have had the Steelers selecting Beatty.
At defensive end, San Jose State‚Äôs Jarron Gilbert and LSU’s Tyson Jackson are at the top of the Steelers radar as both players are seen as 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL. Jackson likely won‚Äôt be around at 32, though.
The Steelers are very high on Cal’s Alex Mack but they are looking for a versatile interior lineman that can play guard and center.
That could play into the Steelers going with Oregon’s Max Unger or Louisville’s Eric Wood over Mack.
Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis who visited the Steelers last week, did not fail a drug test, contrary to previous reports.
