Penguins Free Agency Update I
The Pittsburgh Penguins have secured a deal with defenseman Matt Hunwick. The agent informed the team in the last half hour Hunwick will be signing with the Penguins. It will be a multi-year deal, a source says.
[Updated 12:00 p.m.: The deal is officially a 3 year, $6.75 million contract].
As reported here last night, Hunwick emerged on the Penguins radar and has been a player they’ve had interest in for a few seasons.
What the Penguins like is the skating ability to get out of trouble and feel he’ll be a natural in leading the breakout and has a good first pass. Hunwick doesn’t produce a lot of points but provides the Penguins with more versatility than Ron Hainsey.
Hunwick has shown the ability to log minutes as a bottom-pairing defenseman and on the PK. Coaches also rave about the type of person Hunwick is in the room.
“Great [hide] leader,” an NHL assistant coach said via text of Hunwick.

Forgot more than you will ever know. First of all the entire body of work is never considered Yoda II because if that was the case Sully wouldn’t be coach. Second the cycle of things in professional sports is always in three years no matter the sport proven time and time again. That’s what they need – a 3rd line center locked up for 6 years at $6M.
One that can slide up and play a top 2 role. One who dominates as a penalty killer. Who are their next big free agent concerns to lock up over the next few years? You think Wilson, Rust or Kuhnhackl will demand big raises? Maybe Reaves or a beaten down Hornqvist? Ian Cole? Yes, if you can get a 3C like Staal you do it.
Jordan Staal is overpaid. Period. He’s overpaid for what he is. If you want to pay a 3rd line center $6M, you go get a #2 center that can play and actually produce and slot him in a #3 role on this team – and pay him $6M – Jordan Staal isn’t a top 6 forward. Never has been. But he’s paid like one. Regardless, you don’t pay a 3rd line center $6M….over 6 f’ing years.
