Just 5 days after designating Zach Duke for assignment, the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening traded Duke to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later.
Duke, 27, went 8-15 last season with a 5.72 ERA. Duke made a salary of $4.3 million last season.
In six major league seasons with Pittsburgh, Duke posted a 45-70 record. His best season came in his rookie year, going 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 2005.
The Diamondbacks acquisition of Duke is an opportunity for them to negotiate with him before the December 3rd arbitration deadline.
The Diamondbacks will not tender Duke and are looking to sign him for a deal lower than the $4.3 million he made last season.
The Pirates will receive a lower tier prospect in return, and the played to be named later is not tied to the Diamondbacks signing Duke.
