Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger to no surprise, is in the process of restructuring his contract. Roethlisberger’s agent Ryan Tollner and Steelers officials met this week to begin the process of restructuring Roethlisberger’s deal to help the Steelers get under the salary cap room. Roethlisberger is scheduled to carry a $19.595 million cap hit and has a base salary of $11.6 million. The bulk of Roethlisberger’s base salary will be turned into a signing bonus. High priced players like Roethlisberger are always fans of restructuring because they get their money for that season upfront.
Roethlisberger, 30, has three seasons left on his current deal and seeks an extension, although the Steelers are not believed to be open to negotiating a new deal until next off-season. Roethlisberger turns 31 in March.
Meanwhile, Ed Bouchette of the Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are also in the process of restructuring Lawrence Timmons. Timmons has an $11.160 million cap hit.
The Steelers have no choice but to restructure Roethlisberger’s and Timmons deals to get under the cap and a few more restructures and cuts will also be coming.
